Yesterday we posted the quickie version of our ‘Fishy story’ that will be mutated, regurgitated and propagated and that someday will eventually become an urban legend (Fiji style) in our bar on the regular balmy nights here at Club Fiji.
So what we’d thought we’d do for prosperity’s sake is to reach out and contact the real life role players in this little ‘diddy’. We did and they replied back in a true Club Fiji ‘yarning moment’ (a Fiji slang for story telling most probably derived from the term ‘spinning a yarn’). Now here is the real life version as written by our recent guests and now first & favorite guest bloggers Derek & Katie McKenna. So without further adieu, Ladies and Gentlemen, We give you Derek and Katie!!!!!
We are having a great time in Fiji. It is very hot here – hard to believe it is supposedly the middle of winter in these parts. We managed to leave Las Vegas relatively unscathed, although we did get a rather expensive lesson on the craps tale.
We have a rather amusing fishing tale to tell. We decided to wander out and do some snorkeling yesterday. Was walking past a large area of water that had been cut off from the sea by the low tide and noticed a fin breaking the surface. Closer inspection revealed it to be a quite large fish. We ran back to the resort and enlisted the help of a local bartender called Fai before going out to get it armed with a foot long section of 3 by 2.
After trying to grab its tail without success for 10 minutes we managed to chase it into a shallower part of the water where we jumped on it and managed to wrestle it to the bottom before getting a hold on it’s tail and pulling the madly thrashing beast onto the beach. Apparently it’s a Trevally. Weighed in at 18kg.
As you can imagine the locals were pretty impressed when we arrived back with it and no rod or anything. We enjoyed a lovely fresh fish dinner last night free of course and I was pleased to hear the staff were treated to a fish lunch today.
Well we better sign off as it’s almost low tide again
Lots of Love
Derek + Katie xx
