Visitors in Awe of friendly Fijians
Saint Peter’s School students and teachers from Hamilton, New Zealand, with All Saints students and teachers. Despite all odds, the friendliness of Fijians remains unchanged and their welcoming spirit greater than expected, say a group of Kiwi students. The students from Saint Peter’s School in Hamilton, New Zealand, were in awe of the gesture of locals who performed traditional ceremonies in Labasa to welcome the group at the weekend.
The students are on an exchange program with students of All Saints School, learning about the Fijian culture and giving back in assistance. Group chaplain Reverend Chris Tweddell said the students from NZ were happy and the trip was to see more of the way of living in Fiji.
“The program happens every four years where students from New Zealand travel to All Saints School and a group from here travel to Saint Peter’s, but at a different time. The program has been a success and our stay so far has been a fruitful one and we are enjoying it very much,” Mr Tweddell said. He said students of All Saints welcomed them with Fijian traditional ceremonies and the Kiwi students could not get over the Fijian outfit worn by those performing the ceremony.
All Saints School principal Sumiran Pratap said both schools belonged to the Anglican church and having such visits were rewarding.
“They donate computers, sporting gear and other machinery for the students which have been used by the school. When our students go over, they take with them Fijian artwork and a lot of Bula material so it has been a success,” Mr Pratap said.
